Historic launch puts Europe on the private launch map
Isar Aerospace lifted its Spectrum vehicle from the Andøya launch site on the remote Norwegian island of Andøya this weekend. The rocket endured max dynamic pressure, shed its first stage, ignited the second stage and crossed the Kármán line before completing the burns required to place its payloads into the intended orbit.
"The moment Europe had its own space capabilities," said Daniel Metzler, CEO of Isar Aerospace.
Why the launch matters for European security
For decades European firms have supplied satellites and scientific payloads but have relied on non-European launch providers. The ability to launch from European soil removes a strategic bottleneck that has long dictated who can put hardware into orbit, on what timetable and under which conditions. NATO views space as an operational domain equal to air, land, sea and cyber, and the Alliance depends on timely access to orbit for missile warning, weather forecasting, secure communications and intelligence.
STARLIFT and the NATO Innovation Fund
The successful flight gives the NATO-backed STARLIFT programme its first proven, sovereign European launch vehicle. STARLIFT is designed to give allied nations a reliable, multilateral access-and-launch framework, reducing dependence on a single provider and mitigating the risk of geopolitical disruption.
What comes next for European launch capability
Isar Aerospace plans to scale production to as many as 40 rockets a year and is building a second launch site in Nova Scotia. The next step, however, lies with NATO members and European governments acting as anchor customers. By committing to purchase launch services, they will sustain the commercial supply chain and ensure that replacement and augmentation payloads can be placed in orbit on short notice.
The Alliance's Commercial Space Strategy, endorsed by defence ministers in February 2025, calls for greater reliance on commercial providers and guarantees that space services remain available in peace, crisis and conflict. Continued demand from allied ministries and agencies will turn Isar's technical achievement into a repeatable, scalable capability that underpins deterrence and resilience across the continent.
