Elon Musk told staff at SpaceX that they will become the "parents" of the company's new artificial-intelligence system, GrokAI, as it is trained on the collective knowledge of the workforce.
What Musk announced
During an all-hands meeting shared on X, Musk explained that the AI model will be built on the "sum total" of SpaceX's internal data, including the ideas, designs and engineering work contributed by employees. He said the model would inherit their "thoughts and ideas and beliefs".
"So in a way, it will be trained on you," Musk said.
The exact categories of employee information that will be fed into the model have not been detailed, and SpaceX has not provided a full explanation of how the data will be handled.
Why the move matters
By turning its workforce into a data source, SpaceX hopes to accelerate the development of a powerful AI that could support its rocket design, satellite operations and the growing Starlink internet service. Musk has suggested that AI revenue could outstrip all other SpaceX businesses as early as September, and that a 10-gigawatt AI computing platform could generate between $300 billion and $500 billion a year.
SpaceX currently runs about 1.4 gigawatts of AI-focused computing and aims to reach the 10-gigawatt target by the end of 2027. The company went public in June, raising roughly $75 billion, with the prospectus stating that proceeds would fund growth, including expansion of AI infrastructure.
Future steps and industry context
The approach mirrors a recent experiment by Meta, which in April launched a programme that recorded employee mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes to train its own models. While Meta said the data would not be used for performance reviews, about 1,600 staff signed a petition objecting to the tracking.
SpaceX has not yet responded to requests for comment on the GrokAI plan. The next phase will likely involve defining the data-collection framework, securing employee consent and integrating the model into the company's product lines. Observers will watch how the initiative influences SpaceX's AI revenue projections and whether it sets a precedent for other technology firms seeking to harness internal expertise for AI development.
