Alex Atallah's OpenRouter to be bought by Stripe in $7bn deal

Stripe is set to purchase OpenRouter, the AI model-switching platform founded by Alex Atallah, for more than $7 billion, signalling a major push into the AI services market and offering developers a broader, cheaper toolkit.

Alex Atallah's startup OpenRouter is poised to become part of payments giant Stripe after the two companies agreed on a deal worth over $7 billion, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Deal details

The acquisition, announced in early August, follows OpenRouter's rapid rise since its 2023 launch. The New York-based platform aggregates more than 400 artificial-intelligence models, allowing developers to switch between providers in search of the most efficient and affordable solution. Sources say the final purchase price could still vary, but the headline figure already dwarfs the $150 million the startup has raised from investors such as CapitalG, Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures.

Why the acquisition matters

For Stripe, best known for its online payment infrastructure, the deal offers a foothold in the fast-growing AI sector. Companies across Europe are increasingly scrutinising the cost of AI services, and OpenRouter's model-agnostic approach promises to lower barriers for developers seeking to embed intelligent features without locking into a single provider.

Industry analysts note that while firms like Anthropic and OpenAI dominate the headline-grabbing AI market, a growing list of cheaper alternatives, many from Chinese providers, are sufficient for routine tasks. OpenRouter's ability to route traffic to these alternatives could make AI adoption more sustainable for European businesses.

Future outlook

OpenRouter currently serves around eight million developers, many of whom experiment with different models to build agentic capabilities. The acquisition could accelerate integration of AI routing tools into Stripe's existing suite of developer products, potentially offering seamless payment-plus-AI workflows.

While Stripe declined to comment publicly and OpenRouter did not respond, the move follows earlier reports that the payment processor had been in talks to pay as much as $10 billion for the startup. Alex Atallah, who previously co-founded the NFT marketplace OpenSea, described OpenRouter as "the AI equivalent of Stripe" earlier this year, hinting at a strategic fit that now appears to be materialising.

Looking ahead, the combined entity may expand its services across Europe, helping firms navigate the complex pricing structures of AI providers and ensuring continuity when a chosen model becomes unavailable. The acquisition underscores the broader trend of tech giants diversifying into artificial intelligence, a development that regulators in Brussels are watching closely.
