From a novel to a scientific warning
Kim Stanley Robinson opened his 2020 novel The Ministry for the Future with a catastrophic heat wave in India that, combined with a power-grid collapse, kills 20 million people. The fictional disaster forces nations to unite against climate change. Today, climate experts say the scenario is moving from speculative fiction to a plausible future.
Why the heat wave matters
Scientists have warned for decades that a warming planet will generate more frequent and severe extreme-weather events, heat waves, floods, storms and droughts. The concern is now framed as an "extreme of extremes", a term that captures the possibility of a single event causing unprecedented loss of life.
"The risk is that people just think you are exaggerating," said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the California Institute for Water Resources. "It's the 'Boy Who Cried Wolf' problem. Sometimes wolves are real. If it's outside the door, wouldn't you want to know?"
The warning matters because the world is already seeing the ingredients for such a disaster accumulate: rising global temperatures, strained infrastructure and expanding populations in vulnerable regions.
Historical roots of climate science
In the 1850s, amateur scientist Eunice Newton Foote demonstrated that carbon dioxide traps heat in glass cylinders, an early insight into the greenhouse effect. Today, the planet is about 1.44 °C warmer than in the early 1800s, a rise that fuels more intense heat waves.
Recent extreme events across the globe
Australia's "Black Summer" bushfires of 2019-20 scorched 19 million hectares. Pakistan's 2022 floods submerged a third of the country. Hurricanes Milton and Helene in 2024 devastated parts of the southern United States. These incidents illustrate an emerging "age of extremes".
What experts say about future risk
Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate scientist at the Australian National University, described a personal "come to Jesus moment" when she realised that even immediate net-zero emissions would not halt the onslaught of extreme weather. She likened the situation to a frog in boiling water, gradual changes become invisible until it is too late.
Sonia Seneviratne, a Swiss climatologist who co-chairs a working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), compared the rising risk of massive events to smoking and lung cancer: each additional tenth of a degree raises the probability of disaster.
Lucy Jones, a seismologist who helped retrofit Los Angeles for earthquakes, argues that people will act only when they perceive risks as real and solutions as feasible. She warns that climate denial often serves as a coping mechanism.
Tim Lenton, a climate-science professor at the University of Exeter, stresses that scientists now view "tipping points", such as coral bleaching and Amazon rainforest dieback, as imminent rather than hypothetical.
What happens next?
Modelling improves each year, but pinpointing when a specific catastrophe will strike remains impossible. Nonetheless, the trend is clear: the interval between extreme events is shrinking, and the potential human cost is rising.
Policymakers in Europe and beyond are urged to accelerate emissions reductions, harden infrastructure, and develop emergency response plans that account for worst-case scenarios. The European Commission's climate strategy (ec.europa.eu/clima) calls for rapid decarbonisation and resilience building, but implementation varies across member states.
As the scientific community continues to sound the alarm, the challenge will be translating that warning into concrete action before fiction becomes reality.
