Across Europe, a growing number of students are turning to artificial intelligence to complete assignments, from literature reviews to code, without understanding the material. The phenomenon mirrors the ancient Ring of Gyges story from Plato's Republic, where a magical ring granted invisibility and led to moral transgression.
The rise of AI-assisted plagiarism
Tools such as Claude can generate essays, fabricate data sets and even solve equations in seconds. A recent behavioural study cited by John Paul Rollert found that one third of students at Harvard admit to using AI illicitly. In the United Kingdom, an estimated 22 % of students reported using AI to cheat during the 2023/24 academic year, and the figure is likely higher now.
At King's College London, the use of AI to produce student feedback is officially sanctioned, while at Cambridge the main objection to AI-assisted marking is that the technology is "not yet good enough" rather than a defence of human judgement. This permissive environment encourages both students and staff to outsource intellectual work to machines.
"If everyone else is using it, why shouldn't I?", a sentiment echoed by many students facing mounting pressures.
Why the problem matters
The surge in AI-driven cheating threatens the fundamental purpose of universities: to develop knowledgeable, critical thinkers. When essays are produced by algorithms, the assessment of a student's understanding becomes meaningless, undermining the credibility of degrees and eroding public trust.
Philosophers such as Immanuel Kant argued that universal dishonesty would collapse the value of truth-telling. In a similar vein, widespread academic fraud could devalue qualifications, making it harder for employers to distinguish genuine competence from algorithmic output.
What universities and regulators can do
European institutions are beginning to respond. The European Commission is expected to issue guidance on the ethical use of AI in education, and several national bodies are exploring detection software and revised assessment formats that limit the advantage of generative tools.
Moving assessments back to controlled, in-person environments, or designing tasks that require personal reflection and oral defence, could restore a measure of integrity. Moreover, clear policies that distinguish acceptable research assistance from outright plagiarism are essential.
the challenge is not only technical but cultural. Universities must reaffirm the value of human erudition and communicate that learning is more than a final grade. Without decisive action, the risk is that higher education becomes a credentialing service rather than a crucible for critical thought.
