Dario Amodei's Anthropic $2tn IPO could create millionaires

Anthropic is pursuing a $2 trillion IPO that could make many employees millionaires, but the company is now probing candidates on how they would feel if the stock collapsed, highlighting concerns over incentives and wealth concentration in the AI sector.

Anthropic office with employees working on AI projects

Dario Amodei is steering Anthropic toward a potential $2 trillion initial public offering, a valuation that would dwarf most tech listings and could turn thousands of its 2,500-plus staff into millionaires.

Why the IPO matters

The size of the offering would place Anthropic alongside the most valuable public-benefit corporations and could set a new benchmark for the artificial intelligence industry. A public-benefit corporation, Anthropic is legally required to consider the broader impact of its work, not just shareholder profit.

Employee wealth and the culture interview

Amid the excitement, the firm has begun asking job candidates a stark question during culture interviews: how would they feel if Anthropic ever abandoned its AI ambitions for safety reasons and the stock fell to zero. One candidate, speaking on the anonymous platform Blind, replied:

"I was honest and said no, I would not be happy if the stock went to 0. I would want to align doing the most good and remaining ethical while building a sustaining business."

Amodei, whose personal net worth is estimated at $15.5 billion, has warned that massive financial incentives could undermine the company's mission-driven culture.

Competing for talent

To attract top AI researchers and engineers, Anthropic is offering base salaries ranging from $320,000 to $405,000 for software engineering roles, well above the tech industry average. The firm currently lists more than 500 open positions, including around 90 in sales, over 60 in AI research and engineering, and 47 in security.

Some candidates are even paying several thousand dollars for private interview coaching, a practice that, according to interview-prep founder Aline Lerner, makes financial sense when a higher salary is at stake.

Broader wealth trends in AI

The prospect of rapid wealth creation is not unique to Anthropic. After SpaceX's $1.77 trillion IPO, roughly 400 current and former employees saw stakes worth more than $100 million each. As AI valuations climb, similar windfalls are expected across the sector.

Amodei's warning on concentration

Amodei has cautioned that such concentration of wealth could "break society". Earlier this year he and six co-founders, including his sister Daniela Amodei, pledged to give away 80 percent of their fortunes. In a public letter he wrote:

"Wealthy individuals have an obligation to help solve this problem. It is sad to me that many wealthy individuals, especially in the tech industry, have recently adopted a cynical and nihilistic attitude that philanthropy is inevitably fraudulent or useless."

The statement underscores a growing debate about the social responsibilities of AI founders and the need for equitable distribution of the sector's gains.

What comes next?

Anthropic's IPO filing is expected later this year. If the offering proceeds, the company will need to balance the lure of massive employee equity with its public-benefit mandate, ensuring that the drive for profit does not eclipse its safety-first ethos. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the firm can retain talent committed to its long-term mission while navigating the pressures of a trillion-dollar market.
